Mohs Provides Higher Cure Rate for Skin Cancer

· Skin Cancer · Comments Off on Mohs Provides Higher Cure Rate for Skin Cancer

Immediately after Mohs surgery.

I performed Mohs surgery and then did a skin graft on this patient.  She had basal cell cancer on her ear.

Mohs surgery is a precise technique to remove skin cancers layer by layer resulting in a higher cure rate than standard excision or radiation therapy.

For example, basal cell carcinomas have a 97 to 99% cure rate.

Mohs also allows me to limit the size of removal and conserve normal skin to minimize scarring.  After removal, I treat the wound in a manner to promote good healing and preserve cosmetic results.

The Mohs procedure can be as short as one hour as in the case of this patient, or it can take several hours depending on the number of layers and type of repair, like a skin graft.  This patient’s skin graft took an additional hour.

This photo was taken 11 days after her Mohs surgery and skin graft.

I became very interested in Mohs during my residency and training at the University of Miami, and then later during my dermatopathology fellowship at Roger Williams Hospital at Boston University.  A dermatopathologist diagnoses skin disorders under a microscope.

Removing a tumor and examining the tissue immediately after removal was a natural for me because of my sub-specialty as a dermatopathologist.

Designed by Frederic E. Mohs, M.D., the surgery excises not only the visible tumor but also any “roots” that may have extended beneath the surface of the skin.

This procedure is most commonly used for the treatment of basal and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common types of skin cancer, although it can also be used to treat melanoma and other types of cancer.

Mohs surgery is often recommended for recurring cancer because its results are so thorough.

My patient 3 1/2 months after Mohs and her skin graft. Her face mask is pulling the top of her ear forward in this photo.

It is ideal for treating cancer in cosmetically and functionally prominent areas such as the nose, eyelids, lips, hairline, ears, hands and feet.

Compared to other skin cancer treatments, Mohs surgery has a very high success rate. As I mentioned, basal cell carcinomas have a 97 to 99% cure rate, while squamous cell carcinomas are cured 94% of the time.

Kysse is new for lips

· Fillers · Comments Off on Kysse is new for lips

I injected my patient with the new Restylane Kysse and she looks amazing!  I only used ½ of a syringe, because she did not want “big lips.”

That’s the beauty of this new product.  I can use less product and still achieve a nice improvement in volume and texture.

Because it is soft and flexible I can shape the lip to the patient’s desire:  a French lip, heart shape or geisha lip, or other options for any age group.

The best news is that this filler lasts longer!  From nine months to possibly up to a year.

Using less filler that lasts longer translates to a value for my patients.

Reveal Younger-Looking Skin!

· Lasers · Comments Off on Reveal Younger-Looking Skin!

Many of you know our friendly nurse, Franny.  She recently had a CO2 CoolPeel treatment that significantly reduced the wrinkles on her face and neck.

The CoolPeel laser helps with stubborn crows feet, lipstick lines, smile lines and pore size.  Most notably, CO2 improves wrinkles that cannot be corrected with fillers.

Franny was also one of the first to receive an Infini treatment, which does a great job of tightening skin.  Genius is the next generation of Infini.  Genius is an improved microneedling treatment with radio frequency.  It addresses sagging, crepey skin, turkey neck, jowls and large pores.  We upgraded to the Genius device last year.

If you have wrinkles along with loose, lax skin, this duo of treatments might do the trick.  Franny has had one CoolPeel and had 2 Infini treatments a couple of years ago.

When you’re in the office, feel free to ask Franny about her treatments and see her results in person!

Key sunscreen ingredient to stop brown spots, melasma

· Sunscreen · Comments Off on Key sunscreen ingredient to stop brown spots, melasma

While the FDA is currently reviewing the ingredients in chemical sunscreen, we now have even more reason to use physical sunblock instead. If melasma or brown spots are an issue for you, research has shown that you have to use an iron oxide product to the block visible light that causes this skin discoloration.

Recent studies have proven that blue light creates changes in the melanocytes in your skin to produce dark, resistant pigmentation.

The two physical blocks that will protect you are:  zinc oxide for ultraviolet light protection and iron oxide to protect from visible light.  These two ingredients are deemed to be safe and effective by the FDA.

I carry several products for your face that will protect from both visible light and ultraviolet light:

  • skinbetter Tone Smart SPF 68 sunscreen compact
  • Avène Mineral High Protection Tinted compact SPF 50
  • Dermatology Boutique BB cream

Skin drops by ISDIN will add visible light protection to your favorite broad spectrum sunscreen and by mixing the two, you can create your own BB cream.

When purchasing sunscreen at the drugstore, look for “broad spectrum.”  This means it blocks both UVB and UVA radiation.  And, as I mentioned above, if you are concerned about brown spots or melasma, look for iron oxide as an active ingredient.

Our favorite skincare products!

· Skin Care · Comments Off on Our favorite skincare products!

Here we are with our favorite skincare products.

Adriana (far left) uses Obagi foaming gel cleanser.  She says it leaves your face so clean and smooth.  No dryness after washing.  Your skin feels moisturized and soft.

Mylene (second to left) loves Skinbetter’s AlphaRet overnight face cream.  It delivers all the retinoid benefits without irritation.

I’m holding biopelle’s Tensage Intensive serum 50 which contains growth factors that repair skin damage.  I also like to use it on my patients, post treatment, to take away redness or irritation, for example, after a CoolPeel CO2 laser treatment.

Jill (far right) recommends emepelle’s serum for estrogen deficient skin.  Just one pump daily can turn the clock back on your skin, by restoring some of what menopause takes away.

Information about getting to our new office

I’m excited to let you know that we’ve moved into our new location right next door to our former office.  Our new address is:

100 N Federal Hwy, Suite 202
Hallandale Beach, FL 33009

The new building is on the corner of US1 and NE 1st St (in between Flanigan’s and our old building).  It is a white 5-story with an “Accesso Partners” sign at the top of the south side. Directions via Google Maps.

Enter from the parking lot door and you’ll find a directory.  We are on the second floor in Suite 202.  There is an elevator.

Our phone numbers and email addresses remain the same.  Our office hours are:

Monday 1 pm – 5 pm
Tue, Wed, Fri 9 am – 5 pm
Thur Closed
Sat 9 am – 3 pm

Not only have we upgraded our facility, but we have also added new technology and skincare to address your skin challenges.

  • I upgraded our radio frequency microneedling treatment to the Genius (it is more comfortable with quicker and better results than Infini.  And, less downtime!)
  • I’m now performing Mohs skin cancer surgery in the office several times a month.  Mohs is often done on the face to retain as much non-cancerous skin tissue as possible to reduce scarring.

Thank you for being a patient.  I appreciate your support of my practice.  It means so much to me.  I’m thrilled to continue to provide you with the best dermatologic services, now in a brand new venue.  I look forward to seeing you soon!

My first Jeuveau patients!

· Toxin (Botox, Daxxify, Dysport, Jeuveau and Xeomin) · Comments Off on My first Jeuveau patients!

Pictured are Stephanie Lee, MD (right), a long-time patient, who brought her friend Soo Han, MD.

Stephanie, who has tried Botox and Dysport previously, came in for a neurotoxin treatment.  I asked if she had heard about Jeuveau.  After I shared the story of the newest toxin to be introduced in nearly a decade, she wanted to be my first patient.

I told her what I learned at the physician advisory meeting* earlier this month.  Jeuveau is made in Korea exclusively for Evolus and it is distributed by Evolus in the USA.

Both ladies were excited to try something new.  They also mentioned that people in Korea are much more likely to start toxin treatments in their 20s, so this new approach to marketing to the young is the way to go.

More Beautiful Lips with Vollure and Volbella

· Fillers · Comments Off on More Beautiful Lips with Vollure and Volbella

My patient, who is in her 60s, wanted to get rid of the lines above her lips and also add volume to her upper lip.

To reduce the “lipstick lines” above her lip, I used Volbella.
In her lip, I used Vollure.

Vollure provides subtle, natural volume and is more spreadable – it can be smoothed out to exactly where you need it.

Vollure for Beautiful Lips

· Fillers · Comments Off on Vollure for Beautiful Lips

It makes my day to receive messages like this!

One syringe of Vollure is all it took to take these great lips to gorgeous.

This photo was taken 7 hours after the procedure.

When you are planning to have filler, stop taking blood thinners one week before your appointment to avoid bruising and bleeding. Things to avoid include: alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen (any NSAID), vitamin E or fish oil (any omega-3).

Silhouette InstaLift

· Threads · Comments Off on Silhouette InstaLift

Our latest cosmetic treatment at Dermatology Boutique is Silhouette InstaLift.  It uses micro-suspension technology to provide you with an immediate lift and gradually restore lost facial volume in the mid-face by triggering your own collagen production.  And it lasts up to 2 years!

In this video, you see a snippet of the procedure which takes about 45 minutes.  First, Mylene was given a local anesthetic—that’s why she doesn’t feel a thing.  Also, you’ll see dark spots on her face where I marked insertion and exit points for the polymer sutures.

Silhouette InstaLift is FDA-cleared and made from a well-known polymer that is frequently used in medical devices and is well tolerated by the body.

Treatment pricing varies depending on the patient’s needs and the number of sutures required. The average range is $850 to $2,500.

Are you a candidate for an InstaLift?  If you want to refresh your appearance without major surgery, injections, or lasers, this might be the new and unique technology for you to lift sagging facial skin or jowls. Suitable candidates have good skin quality, with moderate sagging of the skin in the mid-face. The skin should not be too thick/heavy or too thin.
