Occasionally referred to as sunken eye treatment, under eye filler can reduce the dark circles under your eyes and smooth out fine lines and folds. What I Use for Under Eye Filler
One type of filler I like to work with under the eyes is RHA filler, one of the newer hyaluronic acid fillers. I’ve found that this unique formulation blends well into wrinkles and folds to create an outcome that appears natural. It does an excellent job of making wrinkles simply disappear. I can also inject it into the tear troughs to alleviate the look of eye bags. RHA fillers are designed for the dynamic areas of the face that see repetitive facial movements. When your face shifts to show expression, RHA filler blends in seamlessly. This means you can smile without worrying about your under eye filler looking out of place.
The RHA line includes RHA2, RHA3 and RHA4, each designed for a different depth of injection. This allows me to precisely target fine lines and folds and replace volume where necessary. A recent Glamour article explains the versatility of hyaluronic acid fillers: “HA (Hyaluronic acid) binds to water, making it an ideal product for correcting wrinkles and folds, as it binds with the skin’s own water.” Because HA already exists naturally within your body, it is one of the more popular filler options.
Make Sure You Visit a Board-Certified Dermatologist
It is critical to choose a board-certified dermatologist when you want filler injected. A board-certified dermatologist will have a deeper understanding of facial structure and musculature, ensuring you get a good result.
In the past, I have had patients arrive on my doorstep frustrated with the way a non-expert injector added under eye filler. Fortunately, all hyaluronic acid fillers can be dissolved with Hyaluronidase. Unless you get silicone, PMMA or calcium hydroxyapatite filler, Hyaluronidase can be used to reduce puffiness and palpable lumps that occur from poorly-injected filler. Hyaluronidase can also alleviate blueish marks caused by poorly injected filler. Ultimately, it is best to rely on a board-certified dermatologist when it comes to under eye filler.

What Other Treatments Are Available?
Botox is the most widely known neuromodulator, also otherwise known as a toxin or neurotoxin. I use toxin to target crow’s feet, which are the wrinkles that extend from the corners of your eyes. It temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles, making it an excellent option for preventative wrinkle maintenance. I’ve had patients in their early twenties start toxin injections as a way to prevent wrinkles from deepening and lasting.
The Results of Under Eye Filler: How Long Does it Last?
By preparing for your treatment, you can avoid bruising by avoiding the following for a few days prior to your treatment: alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen (any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory [NSAIDs]), vitamin E or fish oil (any omega-3).
Immediately after receiving under eye filler injections, you can expect a little redness and minor swelling. Ice the area as much as you can for the first several days. Twenty minutes on and 20 minutes off – five times a day. For one week after treatment, avoid aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (ibuprofen, Motrin), St. John’s wort or vitamin E because they may increase bruising and bleeding at the injection sites. For mild discomfort, you may take Tylenol. Immediately after the procedure, you may notice the improvement, but the results tend to appear best after two weeks. As mentioned in an article in Self, “dermal fillers are generally marketed as lasting from six months to a year, but all of the experts SELF spoke to for this story note that under-eye fillers tend to last longer than that (closer to 18 months) because the fillers are in an area of your face that moves less than, say, your lips.” In other words, under eye filler is a fairly long lasting solution.
If possible, I believe the first line of defense for the eye should be nonsurgical. However I always let my patients know if plastic surgery is a better option for them.
