Tearing of the earlobe can occur for a variety of reasons: stretching your ears, wearing too-heavy earrings, and getting your earrings caught in something are just a few examples of what can cause damage. Regardless of your reason, earlobe repair surgery sometimes makes patients nervous. At Dermatology Boutique, we are here to make your surgery and healing process as painless as possible.
What is Earlobe Repair Surgery?
Earlobe repair surgery is a simple in-office procedure. A pre-surgery consultation is required to evaluate the surgical site in advance, as well as determine the appropriate amount of time needed for the surgery. This procedure often takes 30 minutes to an hour; however, repair of larger holes, such as from gauge earrings, may take more than an hour. To prepare for this surgery, please remove any gauge earrings a month or two prior to the procedure to allow the hole to shrink on its own.
During this procedure, you will receive local anesthesia in the form of a lidocaine injection. This will assist in pain management. Dr. Golomb will use stitches to repair the tear and may use injectable fillers to firm up any loose skin.
What is the Healing Process Like?
Bruising, discomfort, and swelling may occur post-procedure as your ears are a very sensitive part of your body. Strenuous activity and workouts should be avoided for at least one week afterwards. Ointment should be applied to your surgery sites every day for the following two weeks and your sutures should be kept clean. Two weeks after your procedure, you will return to the office to have your sutures removed. Healing for a normal pierced ear repair is 6 weeks, while those with gauge ear repair can expect a healing time of 8 to 12 weeks.
You may develop a keloid over the healing site, even if you have not been prone to them in the past. Should this occur, Dr. Cynthia Golomb at Dermatology Boutique has extensive experience in keloid treatment and/or removal.
If you would like to have your ears repierced following the surgery, it is recommended to wait until your healing process is complete. Piercing prior to complete healing can interfere with sutures and create issues.
How Much Does Earlobe Repair Surgery Cost?
Price can vary based on the severity of damage to your earlobe, but you can generally expect a price of $500 per ear for surgery on normally pierced ears. For ears that have been stretched with gauge earrings and have very large holes, the price is usually $750 to $1000 per ear.
During your pre-surgery consultation, Dr. Golomb will determine the amount of time needed for your surgery and provide you with a cost estimate for the procedure.
